Tamburi e Fantasmi

workshop and short film by GROUP50:50

The GROUP50:50 artists explore the connections between drumming and the commemoration of the dead together with a group of students, artists and activists. How to accompany the dead on their journey? How to communicate with them when they are no longer there? They remember cultural practices from times when we still cohabited with spirits and invent cross-cultural rituals to mourn personal losses and the forgotten dead.

Within the framework of "The Time For Denial Is Over" in Palermo, GROUP50:50 artists Huguette Tolinga, Ruth Kemna, Elia Rediger and Eva-Maria Bertschy will realise a ten-day workshop with a group of Palermo residents and Palermo-based theatre maker Diawara Bandiougou. They met the two anthropologists Emanuele Tuminello and Giuseppe Giordano, who told them about the funeral rituals of the Sicilians and the Ghanaian community in Palermo, as well as the Palermo drum maker Santo Vitale. The workshop ended with a performance in the courtyard of the Complesso Monumentale Santa Chiara. A short film will premiere at the beginning of November 2022 as part of "The Time For Denial Is Over" at euro-scene in Leipzig.
